SMALL NEW JERSEY LITERARY PRESS PICKS SIX
FOR A SHOT AT THE ANNUAL PUSHCART PRIZE
RECOGNIZING THE BEST OF 2010 BY SMALL PRESSES

HOBOKEN, NJ (November 18, 2010)  Poets Wear Prada announces its 6 nominees for the 35th Annual Pushcart Prize, the coveted award for the best of the best published by small presses.   Each fall, nominations for the Pushcart Prize are made by little magazine and small book press editors (print or online).  Each editor may make up to six nominations from their year’s publications by the December 1, (postmark) deadline.   Nominations can include a poem, short story, essay or a chapter from a novel, or any "literary whatnot." Translations, reprints and both traditional and experimental writing are also welcomed. The best from these nominations are selected by Bill Henderson and the other Pushcart Press editors for inclusion in the annual print anthology distributed by W. W. Norton, published every year since 1976.

The six nominees and their submitted works in order of their release are as follows:

“The Drop” by Austin Alexis from his chapbook For Lincoln: & Other Poems (Poets Wear Prada, March 2010), a varied collection of poetic portraits -- famous &  unknown -- artists, US Presidents, street people, commuters and family members -- selected as a Small Press Review Pick this past June.  Poets Wear Prada published his previous chapbook LOVERS AND DRAG QUEENS in 2007. This is his second Pushcart nomination by the press.

"Guitar” by Joel Allegretti from his chapbook Thrum: Poems (Poets Wear Prada, March 2010), a pop-culture and trivia infused collection of 22 prose poems and essays about "chordophones" or string musical instruments. “Guitar” was previously published in Porcupine.

“Chores” by the widely traveled and a dedicated outdoors man Gene Auprey from his chapbook Dead Reckoning: Poems (Poets Wear Prada, April 2010), a 50-page collection of memoiristic poems set in rural Maine and written in colloquial New Englandese.

“Girl” by Tantra-zawadi,  the award winning Brooklyn poet/artist/filmmaker from her chapbook Gathered at Her Sky: Life Poems (Poets Wear Prada, June 2010), containing contains excerpts from her off-Broadway production SOLDIER BLUES, and her one-woman performance piece GIRL: A CHOREOSPECTIVE, as well as the text of previously recorded spoken word tracks. “Girl” also appeared in the publication Poetry in Purple as part of Downstate Medical Center’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October 2009.

“Exit 14” by New Jersey Actress and Wordrocker Cyndi Dawson from her chapbook Outside Girl (Poets Wear Prada, June 2010), focusing on the author’s behind-the-scene experiences and reflections on her “coming of age” during the punk rock ’80s in New York and New Jersey.

“At the Kotel” by Philadelphia native and retired speech therapist B.E. Kahn from her chapbook Landscapes of Light: Poems (October, Poets Wear Prada, 2010), tracking her spiritual journey while traveling from Greece to Israel.

Poets Wear Prada, a small literary press based in Hoboken, New Jersey, was founded in October of 2006 to develop and promote new and established narrative and lyrical poets. Some of the poets previously published and nominated by the press include Iris Berman, Carol Wierzbicki, Michael Montlack, Susan Maurer, Erik La Prade, Gil Fagiani, Bob Heman, Maria Lisella and Laura Vookles. Poets Wear Prada blogs at http://pwpbooks.blogspot.com/. Most of their titles are available at Amazon.com.

Her spoken word has been featured on the CD, Going Down Swinging and has been heard on radio stations around the world.

Jackie Sheeler, host of the Friday night open mic series at the Cornelia Street Cafe, writes about OUTSIDE GIRL: "These poems are black leather jackets lined in lace and silk. If you don’t hear the drums booming out of propped-open club doors, if you don’t see the bloodied arm and earlobe of the punk, if you don’t smell the Bowery, mustard greens and car exhaust, then you haven’t been paying attention."

Susan Maurer Gives an Impromptu Reading at Teardrop Park, NYC

Poets Wear Prada poet Susan Maurer took a copy of Bob Heman's CLWN WR (issue 48 which contains her poem "Night Walking" about Teardrop Park ) to a park tour Dorothea Basile recently lead at that park, one of a series of her tours of Battery Park's Conservancy's public art collections. Ms. Basile asked Ms. Maurer to do a reading of her poem on the spot which she very happily did.  Susan Maurer says "It was a beautiful day and it was really fun."

Here's the poem reprinted with the permission of the author:

Artist Greg Lindquist's review "Art Books in Review" of Breaking Through: Richard Bellamy and the Green Gallery, 1960 – 1965 / Twenty-Three Interviews by Erik La Prade (Midmarch Arts Press, 2010) appears in the month's (November 2010) issue of The Brooklyn Rail under ARTSEEN, available online at:

Breaking Through: Richard Bellamy and the Green Gallery, 1960 – 1965
Twenty-Three Interviews
By Erik La Prade
Midmarch Arts Press, 2010

"La Prade synthesizes a rich and sometimes superfluous account, often seeking consensus among the recollections. In doing so, he provides a more expanded view of this brief period between Abstract Expressionism and the Pop and Minimalism movements than can be found in most accounts, while discarding the historical terminology and revisionism that has since occurred in canonical texts." -- Greg Lindquist, THE BROOKLYN RAIL

Erik La Prade is also the author of the poetry chapbook SWATCHES (Poets Wear Prada, 2008) now available at  Amazon.com.

A Prose-Poem/Essay by Joel Allegretti on Best American Poetry Blog

Monday, November 8, 2010 2:24 PM

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

The editor of SENTENCE: A JOURNAL OF PROSE POETICS posted a prose-poem/essay of mine, "Gaston Leroux," on THE BEST AMERICAN POETRY blog. The piece will appear along with two others, "Man Ray" and "Jules Verne," in the new issue of SENTENCE. Gaston Leroux created my favorite literary character.

THRUM, a new chapbook by Joel Allegretti from Poets Wear Prada
ISBN 978-0-9841844-4-6, Trade Paperback, 38pp., $12.00

"In Thrum Joel Allegretti, deftly and delightfully, strums his magical musical instrument, which is poetry, as he forges fresh forms of songs and stories that are inspired by strummers' strings. 'Context is everything,' Allegretti reminds us, and we’re planted in the heart of a global ancient/modern orchestra. Prepare yourself for the revelatory performance."
Martine Bellen
Author of Tales of Murasaki and Other Poems,
1997 National Poetry Series selection

"Joel Allegretti's latest collection of poems is as enjoyable as it is different. Thrum takes the reader on a journey that explores known musical instruments, such as the mandolin, dulcimer and fiddle, as well as some not-so-known instruments, such as the oud, koto and theorbo. But what makes this journey unique is that each instrument is in a sense personified as the emotive element of each instrument is brought to life. Allegretti does a wonderful job tuning every poem so that the music of each instrument is realized again and again in the words on the page. An intriguing and must read for anyone who has a sense of all that culminates in the commingling of the arts."

Read Koh's Ghazals in AT LENGTH

From: Jee Leong Koh

Subject: Ghazals in AT LENGTH

Date: Thursday, November 4, 2010, 5:44 PM

Dear friends,

AT LENGTH, a journal that specializes in long poems, has just published my divan of 49 ghazals "A Lover's Recourse." A number of the ghazals appeared in various journals, but you can now read the entire sequence here [http://atlengthmag.com/poetry/a-lovers-recourse/].  You can read it from start to finish, if you have the stamina, or you can dip in at any point. You can read it online or you can print the pdf file and read it anywhere you wish. I hope you find a pearl or two in the strand of words.

Paul, the poem is for you. Thank you for being the inspiration.

My best regards to everyone,

Jee
